About the customer

The Zona Franca Barcelona Consortium boosts the economy of the metropolitan area of Barcelona through the management of La Zona Franca Industrial Estate, as well as La Zona Franca customs, generating economic and social value and raising international awareness.

Creating the “industrial warehouse” for the 21st century

The Zona Franca Barcelona Consortium is a public sector company that manages an industrial estate of more than 6 million square meters and works with more than 300
different companies. Its vision is to create a leading industrial hub in the Mediterranean, acting as a driving force for attracting, consolidating and projecting companies with
added value, providing them with resources and services for innovation.

“We manage the estate and work with the public and private sector to generate opportunities for companies to thrive and innovate, encourage the formation of new companies, and create new job opportunities,” explains Pere Navarro Morera, Special State Delegate Barcelona, Zona Franca.

“We have created a new state of the art building called the D-Factory,” Pere Navarro Morera continues, “and we already have 30 different companies based there as part of
Industry 4.0, working with sensors, robotics, AI, IoT, 3D printing and cyber-security.”

The building occupies a unique strategic location, 10 minutes from the airport, 15 minutes from the center of Barcelona and 5 minutes from the docks. But to attract and
sustain innovative companies, the building needed to be equipped with the best connectivity technology so that the companies working there have access to the best
services. Today that means 5G.

Connecting the factory of the future with 5G

With the help of Fujitsu, Zona Franca installed the first 5G network in Spain as part of the connectivity network in the D-Factory building.

Fujitsu’s open, integrated 5G network solutions meet connectivity needs for Public 5G and Private 5G networks. The end-to-end portfolio includes O-RAN compliant radios;
virtualized baseband (CU/DU); network automation software; systems integration; optical and packet transport; and maintenance and support programs.

The 5G network delivers anytime, anywhere hyper-connectivity. Reliable, high-capacity, top-quality data connectivity is a key driver for innovation across many companies,
especially the Industry 4.0 brands that DFactory hosts.

“We have found there is great synergy between us and Fujitsu, explains Pere Navarro Morera. “Fujitsu has the technology like 5G, and the means to implement it. That enables us to provide services to the companies who will power the economy in the future.”
